Targeted cyber attacks – sophisticated, well planned and well-resourced – are becoming a serious threat to a growing number of UK companies and government organisations; targeted for various reasons, including the theft of confidential data or of intellectual property.

Context has developed a government-backed Targeted Attack Detection Service (TADS), available as a managed service, on a periodic basis or as part of an incident response process, to address this threat. It is based on the very best tools and techniques available and on Context’s unmatched knowledge and experience in this area. Static and heuristic techniques are used, alongside a continually updated database of IP addresses, hostnames and malware techniques linked to specific countries and organisations. Context also devotes significant resources to the development of advanced behavioural analysis techniques to help identify malware on the network.

Targeted attacks are extremely dangerous because they circumvent conventional defences like firewalls, anti-virus software and intrusion detection systems. Even secure network architectures, boasting immaculate software patch management and industry standard hardware builds and procedures are vulnerable, because attackers use malware that is more sophisticated than the security tools used by the target organisation and that exploits ‘zero day’ security flaws in software – flaws not yet identified and rectified by the software provider.

The technology may also be used in combination with sophisticated social engineering techniques, possibly involving coercion or bribery; or an attack may be triggered by links in innocent-looking emails and instant messages sent to employees of the target organisation.

'TADS plugs the gaps left by other attack detection solutions, giving users the best possible chance of detecting an attack quickly and so improving its ability to defend itself effectively.
